Running the XESame examples

This page will describe how to run the examples for XESame (from, 400 KB).

The XESame zip file contains an examples sub-folder. This folder contains several simple examples on which XESame can be applied. Each example contains 3 sub-folders:

  1. data The data used to extract an event log from;
  2. eventlogs The resulting event logs extracted from the data as an example of the possible result;
  3. mappings Mappings defined using XESame that convert the data to an event log.

In order to run the examples perform the following steps:

  1. Start XESame;
  2. Load (one of) the mapping(s) from the mapping subfolder;
  3. Go to the Connection Settings-tab and remember the URL to the database after the jdbc:odbc: part;
  4. Open the ODBC connection manager by following these steps:
    • If you're on 32-bit Windows follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
      2. On computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 or later, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Data Sources (ODBC). The ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box appears. On computers running previous versions of Microsoft Windows, double-click 32-bit ODBC or ODBC
    • If you're on 64-bit Windows follow these steps:
      1. Start Odbcad32.exe in the %systemdrive%\Windows\SysWoW64 folder;
    • When you don't know if you're using 32 or 64 bit Windows, assume you're using the 32-bit version.
  5. Set up a new connection to the data directory of the current example using an .csv ODBC driver by following these steps:
    • Click add;
    • Choose Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv) or Microsoft Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv) and click finish;
    • Fill in the URL part you just remembered in the Data Source Name field, fill in the description field to your liking;
    • Uncheck the Use Current Directory-checkbox, press the Select Directory-button and locate the data subdirectory of your example
    • Press the OK-button.
  6. Now go back to XESame and press the Test Connection-button:
    • If you get an error, please verify that jdbc:odbc:NAME matches the NAME specified in the Data Source Name field (excluding the jdbc:odbc: part!)
  7. You might want to examine the mapping definition in XESame by browsing the elements in the tree on the top left and the tabs on the top right of the application;
  8. If you want to execute the mapping go to the Conversion Execution tab, you might want to change the event log file location by pressing the button. You can now press the Execute Conversion button. When the Console tab appears without errors, locate your event log and open it with ProM or an text editor.
